6.G.2
Determine the area of triangles and quadrilaterals (squares, rectangles, rhombi, and trapezoids) and develop formulas.

Students use geoboards and grid paper to examine the properties of right triangles and their corresponding squares or rectangles.

Students count square units to determine the area of squares and rectangles and estimate the area of right triangles.

Students and teacher develop a formula for determining the area of shapes.

Learning Objective Student Work Assessment

Construct squares of various sizes and compile data to develop a formula for area of a square.
A = s·s

Review the properties of rectangles and develop a formula for area of a rectangle.
A = l·w

Compare the properties of right triangles to their corresponding rectangles and develop a formula for area of a triangle.

A =

l·w

Area Assessment Questions worksheet attached to drawn figures on grid paper with written explanations or mathematical calculations of figures' areas.

A four point Area Rubric will be used to assess the students' level of understanding with regard to the concept of area and its formulas.
