c/ evidence of appropriate terminal degree
d/ service and contributions to the college
4/ Definitions of criteria:
A positive evaluation by the P&T Committee of the application affirms that it is in the best interest of the mission, growth, image and students of Daemen College to offer the candidate a continuing appointment.
a/ Daemen College is primarily an undergraduate institution devoted to a Liberal Arts education and, as such, the candidates teaching is the most important criterion in evaluating their application. Excellence and effectiveness in teaching should be demonstrated by a portfolio which may include, but is not limited to: a statement of teaching philosophy and pedagogy, course syllabi and objectives, narrative evaluations, evidence of how the candidate teaches to the Core Competencies, evidence of effectiveness as an academic or research advisor, evidence of mentoring students, creation of student manuals, description of any grants received for the improvement of teaching, description of new courses developed or new instructional techniques employed. The Academic Deans office will store originals of Daemen College course/instructor evaluations and will provide the P&T Committee with copies of the evaluations, comments written on the backs of evaluations and departmental evaluation summaries. Candidates are encouraged to include any other materials they deem significant in demonstrating distinction in teaching.
b/ Although scholarship is not stressed as part of the normal requirement for advancement in a number of professions, it is a basic requirement in most academic institutions for both tenure and promotion. It is the responsibility of the department to inform incoming faculty members in writing of departmental scholarship requirements. It is the candidates responsibility to demonstrate to the P&T Committee that their scholarship meets the standard for their discipline.
Recognizing that scholarship may be demonstrated as the Scholarship of Teaching, of Integration, of Discovery, and of Application, evidence of professional development may include, but is not limited to: publication of books, articles in peer-review journals, textbooks, conference proceedings, creating a new program in your discipline, creating a new interdisciplinary program, performances, shows, presenting papers at conferences, poster presentations, book reviews, awards such as Fulbright, NEH, NSF, published creative writing, scholarship resulting from participation in continuing education or professional development courses. Candidates are encouraged to include any other materials they deem significant in demonstrating distinction in their scholarly and professional development.
Candidates should provide the P&T Committee with a description of their publications, presentations or performances as well as of their research interests. Ordinarily, the P&T Committee will place emphasis on research completed while employed by Daemen College, but previous research done at other institutions may be included as evidence of the candidates record. The candidates are encouraged to provide outside evaluation of their research record.
c/ Every department, with the approval of the dean and the divisional chair, should establish a policy on what is considered the "appropriate terminal degree" for positions in their department. This should be indicated on the contract when a faculty member is hired and should be addressed, as necessary, in the yearly evaluation
d/ Service and contribution to the college may include, but is not limited to: participation in departmental, divisional and college-wide committees, participating in or mentoring of student organizations and activities, working as liaison with community groups, organizing academic, professional or cultural events, proposing new programs, revitalizing existing programs, attracting outside funding, recruitment and retention of students.
5/ All full-time faculty members of the candidates department(s) must write a letter of either support or opposition to that candidates application. The letter must address all of the criteria for promotion and tenure published in the Handbook as well as any departmental criteria. The Academic Deans office will store the yearly faculty evaluations by Department and Division Chairs and will provide the P&T Committee with copies. All information received by the P&T Committee is confidential.
6/ Candidates must inform the Deans office in writing of their intent to apply for promotion and/or tenure by October 15. Candidates must submit all materials to the P&T Committee by November 1. After this date additional material will be considered only under exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the P&T Committee. The P&T Committee will finalize meetings with the Dean by December 15. The P&T Committee and the Dean will meet with the President by December 20 to present their recommendations. The President will inform the candidates of the decision in writing by January 5.
7/ A list of faculty who have applied for tenure will be made public by October 20 and members of the Daemen College community will be invited to write letters commenting on the published criteria for .tenure. The writers should indicate the nature and length of time of their contact with the candidate. While the contents of the letters will remain confidential, candidates may request a list of names of those who wrote letters.
