Spotlight on Teaching: A Lunchtime Series on Effective Teaching Strategies Collaborative Learning Collaborative or peer learning is defined as two or more students working together toward a common learning goal. Peer learning can encompass paired or small group discussions, peer tutoring, Peer Led Team Learning, informal study groups, formal team projects, and more. While we know from research that peer learning results in gains in student involvement and achievement, we know from practice that placing students in groups is not always productive. We may wander the classroom to find students talking about anything other than the assignment at hand, or we may assign a graded group project hear some students complain that they got stuck with all the work. Join us for lunch and an informal discussion of common pitfalls and strategies for success with peer learning groups. RSVP to catherto@daemen.edu by Thursday, November 5, 2009. We are pleased to announce our upcoming show in the Gallery, featuring a member of the VPA faculty. Jane Marinsky, Professor of Illustration will be showing the artwork from her just published children's book: The Goat-Faced Girl. Jane will be conducting a book-signing and sale the night of the opening from 6-9pm. There will be an artist's talk on Thursday November 19th at 4pm in the Gallery - in which Jane will discuss her creative process and the experience of developing and publishing a children's book. The exhibit runs November 13 through 30.
